Summer school on "Analysis, Modeling and Simulation of Collective Dynamics from Bacteria to Crowds" (July 9-13.2012, Udine, Italy)

The aim of this school is to present, by means of 6 mini-courses, the state-of-the-art of the theoretical (statistical mechanics and mathematics) understanding of collective motions of crowds.

The topics to be discussed include:

• Kinetic models for self-organized collective motion.
• Discrete and continuum dynamics of reacting and interacting individuals.
• Finite-speed propagation models of chemotactic movements.
• Modeling with measures:
(i) Multiscale modeling of pedestrian motions by time-evolving measures;
(ii) Motions and interactions in heterogeneous domains.
• Handling contacts in pedestrian dynamics: On the concept of pressure.

The target audience of this summer school are graduate students, PhD candidates and young faculty members in mathematics, applied theoretical physics and biology, as well as (chemical, transportation, mechanical, ...) engineering having a strong research interest in understanding the multiscale complexity of the collective motion behavior.

Following the successful 2010 Winter School held at University of Twente, this NDNS+ summer school concerns large scale phenomena and reductions in dynamical systems. The topics covered within this broad area are ergodic theory (an introduction by Evgeny Verbitskiy), mean field limits (François Golse) and dynamic aspects of gamma-convergence (Alexander Mielke & Lucia Scardia). The lectures will be complemented by guided problem sessions.

The school is intended for Ph.D. students and advanced M.Sc. students alike. Early registration ends May 15 and costs 450 Euro, including 4-day lodging and all meals. Participants can also register May 16-31 for a fee of 500 Euro (also including 4-day lodging and all meals).
