Micro and macro in systems of agents and particles

This is to announce an informal ICMS workshop

Open problems between micro and macro in systems of agents and particles

to be held at EURANDOM at TU Eindhoven, on

April 18-20, 2012.

This workshop aims at bringing scientists from different fields together, around a common theme:  the transition from micro to macro scales in systems of particles, agents, dislocations, people, bacteria, animals - any system in which many microscopic elements conspire to create interesting effects at larger scales.

We have selected a group of top researchers with a broad variety of backgrounds, both in theory and experiment, to discuss different perspectives to the problems and the connections between those. The format will be special in that the focus lies on open problems rather than achieved results, and we will organize the meeting such as to optimize informal discussion.

Confirmed speakers are

Rinaldo Colombo (Brescia)
Gero Friesecke (Munich)
Florian Theil (Warwick)
Guy Theraulaz (Toulouse)
Edward Wilson (Southampton)
Alfons van Blaaderen (Utrecht)
Angela Stevens (Münster)
Stefan Zaefferer (Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung Düsseldorf)
Lorenzo Bertini (Rome)
Kees Weijer (Dundee)
Ronald van Katwijk (TNO Helmond)
